Italy end of 18th century.

4000 EURO

A wax sculpture (wax modeling) of a Saint bust.
The sculpture is mounted on an ebonized fruitwood base, with a rectangular base, with a raised part highlighted by a carved and gilded wooden decoration with a pearl and leaf motif. The base rises with a central element with a rectangular base with two symmetrical curvilinear motifs. It was made according to the ancient tradition of devotional and portrait wax sculpture that has been widespread throughout Italy since the 16th century. The sculptures had glass paste eyes, were intensely expressive with parts sculpted by hand and parts sometimes added later (according to the ‘hot iron’ technique). The face represents an elderly saint such as Saint Jerome, Saint Joseph or Saint Anthony the Abbot. Italy, late 18th century.
